TIME’s Person of the Year choice sparks outcry in light of Israeli aggression on Gaza

Time magazine’s person of the year choice for 2023, Taylor Swift, has ignited a wave of criticism, in light of ongoing Israeli military agression in Gaza.

This decision, in contrast to last year’s honoring of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky upon the Russian armed operation on neighboring Ukraine, has drawn accusations of hypocrisy and bias within the infamous US publication.

Internet users argue that Swift’s recognition appears out of touch with the global turmoil, especially considering the gravity of the situation in Gaza. Zelensky’s acknowledgment last year was hailed as a tribute to him and the resilience of Ukrainians amid challenging times.

The stark difference in tone between the two selections raises questions about Time’s editorial choices potential geopolitical biases and pro-Israel stance.

The announcement prompted a swift and vehement response from internet users, who expressed their discontent with the decision. Many argued that the prestigious title should have been bestowed upon individuals directly involved in addressing the crises, such as Palestinian journalists and doctors working tirelessly in Gaza.

In contrast to Time’s decision, Middle East GQ recently dedicated its latest edition to shed light on the Gaza conflict by honoring 23-year-old journalist Moataz Azaiza as its Man of the Year.

Azaiza, alongside fellow journalists, has been actively documenting and disseminating graphic updates, providing a stark portrayal of the atrocities unfolding in Palestine ever since they first unfolded.

Time’s extensive coverage of Ukraine and Zelensky in the past emphasized his leadership during the Russian invasion, portraying him as a “great person” who stood with his people during times of peril.

The in-depth piece showcased the destruction in Ukrainian cities, painting a sympathetic picture of the Ukrainian president and his nation.

However, the conspicuous absence of a similar spotlight on the Palestinian crisis has not gone unnoticed. Many argue that this silence exposes a clear bias and a pro-Israel stance, raising concerns about the magazine’s objectivity in covering global events.

Notably, Taylor Swift, now considered one of the most influential figures globally, has remained silent on the Gaza situation, just like many influential names such as Selena Gomez, Amal Clooney, and more.

Internet users have called the decision to name her Person of the Year “unholy” and “sinister,” demanding recognition for those actively engaged in humanitarian efforts.
