The Propaganda Model Revised

Edward, Herman

In 1996, Edward Herman wrote : “the Propaganda Model Revised”,  He explains that with Noam Chomsky, they created “the Propaganda Model” as a background to study and understand how the American media performs.

Herman explains what he means by the Propaganda Model, Government and other non-media businesses have the power to be able to pressure the media in direct and indirect forms; for instance: threats of withdrawal of advertising or TV licenses, libel suit and others.

The article is interesting as it sheds light on some weaknesses in the model that the writer organizes as critical statements. Such as the conspiracy theory, the lack of professionalism and objectivity, being too functional and mechanical etc.

However, the model holds up nearly a decade after its publication. Herman explains how the propaganda model was beneficial in media coverage of important political topics in the 1990s. At the end, criticizing the Model could make its improvement feasible.
